Interracial Families

I would like to look further into how our perceptions of race affect our
perceptions and decisions. I would like to focus on mixed race families.

Journals

Interracial Marriage & Families

Multiracial families are becoming more accepted. The two most prevalent interracial marriages are between White male & Asian female, followed closely by Black male & White female marriages. The first journal I found, by Roland G. Fryer "Guess Who’s Been Coming to Dinner? Trends in Interracial Marriage over the 20th Century" contains interesting historical facts and statistics about this interracial marriage.

Interracial Marriages and Marital Dissolution

This journal, "Marital dissolution among interracial couples." by Yuanting Zhang and Jennifer Van Hook, discusses the likleyhood of interracial marital dissolution. An interesting fact is that the divorce rate of an interracial couple is not the same as the dominate race involved, but is somewhere in between the two races. The journal also discusses the difficulty of Black/White marriages because of the harshness of discrimination towards both races in this pairing. The article includes data on interracial marriages of Hispanic, Asian and White couples.

U.S.: Mixed Marriages in the South - nytimes.com/video

This video "U.S. Mixed Marriages in the South" from the New York Times addresses Mixed Marriages. Although the focus is on the South, it is relative to all states. I choose it because of the positive messages these parents are giving to their children. It also addresses the struggles that one family faces with acceptance within the family, the hurt it causes and how they choose to deal with it. Follow the link below for the video.

Bill De Blasio's Interracial Marriage Shatters Traditional Ideas Of Race And Politics

This current article in The Huffington Post about the newly elected Mayor of New York City, Bill De Blasio and his interracial marriage. It supports the information in the "Guess Who’s Been Coming to Dinner?..." journal post about how interracial marriage is becoming more common.

WHO’S STILL AFRAID OF INTERRACIAL MARRIAGE?

loving-vs-virgina
I chose this article on “The New Yorker” web site, posted by by Jilani Cobb, because the article articulates some new ideas including news that I have not mentioned in this blog, and supports information regarding the historical discrimination and “double standard” of White and Black, Male and Female. This includes the previously mentioned article of the Mayor of NYC, a White man married to a Black woman. Including the idea that a Black man with a White woman, as is the case with President Obama’s parents, and the theory this can cause some resentment among some Whites.

The article also refers to "Lovings vs. Virginia" mentioned in previous articles.

  2. This is a great blog post! Your entire blog is very clean and organized and may be my favorite one so far! I really enjoyed this post because you included lots of pictures that helped break up the impressive amount of discussion that you had on this topic. I liked your video because, even though this topic is applicable almost everywhere, I feel that the south has a lot of issues with interracial couples and it was interesting to watch.
